The Eurasian Otter, Lutra lutra, also known as the European otter or fish otter, is a member of the Lutra family. The otter occurs in much of Europe and Asia. Otters are only able to survive if the quality of the freshwater environment in an area is particularly good. It is not without reason that the otter is known as ‘the ambassador of the freshwater environment’. IWE is constantly striving to ensure suitable ecological conditions for the otter.
